Our Story

The BedroomKing Story: From Craftsmanship to Comfort

I was helping my sister redecorate her flat in Wakefield in 2011. Money was tight, space was even tighter and we’d spent hours trawling websites, showrooms and catalogues looking for a decent bed. Everything was overpriced and underwhelming.

Finally, tired of the choices given to us, we did something that would slyly change the course of my life: we built our own. Not exactly from scratch – we found an old frame and designed our own headboard, bought the fabric in a market in Leeds and put it all together in a weekend. That bed?

It was way better than anything we saw online. And it worked. It was simple, stylish, affordable and most importantly, made with care.I didn’t realize I just built the prototype of Bedroom King at the time. Looking back, that moment planted a seed that never stopped growing.

An Idea That Refused to Go Away

Word went around over the next few months. Friends asked me to do beds for their flats. My uncle wanted a base with custom dimensions. A neighbour wanted a drawer option. There was a demand. But more than that there was a shared frustration.

It seemed that everyone I spoke to had the same problem: “Why is it so hard to find a good bed that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg?”That stayed with me. I was working full time in logistics at the time, but started building the beds on weekends. I spent nights researching fabrics, frames and mechanisms. I learned about Ottoman lifts, slatted bases and strengthened corners.

I began testing frames that could stand up to years of real usage – kids jumping on them, people moving house, the odd spilled coffee.Soon the garage was full. Then the spare room. Then my mate's unit across town.

Building Something That Lasts

“Bedroom King launched officially in 2013 and we had only three models to sell - a normal divan, a velvet ottoman and a storage bed with drawers. I remember the first real sale on the internet. It was from Sheffield.

A couple had seen one of our Facebook posts and messaged us late at night: “Hi, can you make this in king size with a taller headboard? We can. We did. What followed was months of long days, weekend deliveries and sourcing locally where we could.

We didn’t have tons of capital, but we had something more valuable: real care. Every bed that left our little shop had been built and tested by someone who knew what it was like to live in a real home, with kids and pets and small rooms and tighter budgets.

Why the Name “Bedroom King”?

Funny story, we didn’t intend on being called Bedroom King. Original name idea was “York Beds Co.” but it didn’t stay. That sounded a little too formal. Too forgetable.

One night, my brother and I were talking and joking, and we said, “If we’re making beds fit for royalty, let’s just call it Bedroom King. ”It made us laugh.” But the more we said it, the more it worked.

It was brave and confident, and just a little cheeky, just like the brand we were trying to build. That night we registered the domain. We never looked back since.

Quality, Not Quantity

Even as demand increased, we didn't want to be a warehouse brand that just "shipped boxes".Our assembly team has been kept in-house. We personally trained each new joiner.

We established relationships with suppliers in the UK, some in close proximity, to oversee quality and bolster local economies. We decided if something wasn’t right, we’d fix it. No questions. No long waits. Just a real person. On the phone. Ready to help. We make that promise to this day.
